The other day I visited a nursing home called “Sakura no Yamashina” for a music therapy session.  It’s located in a quiet part of Yokosuka city in Kanagawa prefecture surrounded by the beautiful bay and endless hills.  From outside this small nursing home looked nothing unusual, but as soon as I walked in the back door I saw something I had never seen before -two dogs with a backpack walking down the hallway.

I asked a member of the staff what the dogs were doing.  She said,

“Their job is to get the morning newspaper and deliver it to our residents.”

She smiled and added, “But they can’t do it by themselves yet.”

For decades, the international perception of ramen was that it was something for lazy college students to buy in bulk for when they wanted a quick, hot meal, with only minimal thought given to flavor or presentation. And while ramen does sometimes take that form, assuming it’s all like that is sort of like basing your whole image of pizza on microwavable frozen varieties.

Thankfully, there’s a ramen renaissance going on, as the rest of the world is getting onboard with just how delicious Japan’s favorite noodle dish can be. Happy 16th birthday to Stationmaster Tama, Wakayama’s favorite feline

Not only is April 29 Showa Day and a national holiday, it’s also the birthday of none other than Ultra Station Master Tama, the adorable feline in charge of Kishi Station in Wakayama Prefecture.

Tama was born in 1999, making this her sweet sixteenth bithday. She’s had a pretty good career for someone who hasn’t even finished high school yet!
